The layout grid

The Layout Grid Editor

The Layout Grid editor lets you configure the grid and the rulers. With it you can choose

for this session with this document. To change these settings to a new default for all sessions with all document, make changes to the Preferences.

To open the Layout Grid editor

1. choose Layout Grid Editor from the Window menu

or

2. click the grid editor button Grid Editor in the launcher

To choose whether to show the vertical or horizontal lines of the grid

1. click the Draw Horizontal Lines or Draw Vertical Lines checkboxes

To specify the size of the separation between grid lines

1. enter the value in the fields labeled Separate Vertical Lines by and Separate Horizontal Lines by

To specify whether the grid is based on pixels, ems or a percentage of the width of the window

1. choose pixels, ems or % from the popup menu to the right of the fields described above

To specify whether elements snap to the grid when dragged around or resized

1. click the Snap to Grid? checkbox

Remember, you can change the Preferences to change the default settings for all of these.

Menu shortcuts

To quickly show and hide the layout grid, or to turn on or off snap to grid easily, the Grid menu has menu items for each of these.

To show or hide the layout grid for the front window

1. choose Show Grid or Hide Grid (Cmd+G)from the Grid menu

If the grid is currently showing, it will be hidden, while if it is hidden, it will be shown.

To turn on snap to grid if it is currently off, or on if it is currently on

1. choose Snap to Grid from the Grid menu.

This "toggles" the state of snapping to the grid. When snap to grid is on, there is a check mark next to the Snap to Grid menu item.
